Experienced Educator Dr. TK Kennedy Named
Principal of Legion Collegiate Academy.
ROCK HILL, S.C.—Pinnacle Charter Academies, the educational management organization for Legion Collegiate Academy, has hired Dr. TK Kennedy to serve as principal of the new dual enrollment public charter high school that is scheduled to open in York County during the fall of 2019. Dr. Kennedy has served a distinguished 27-year career in public education as a teacher, coach and school administrator, and most recently served at York Preparatory Academy as Director of School Operations following four years as a principal. Legion Collegiate Academy (LCA) will be the third charter high school under the management of Pinnacle Charter Academies to open in South Carolina during a six-year period. The other two are Gray Collegiate Academy in West Columbia and Oceanside Collegiate Academy in Mt. Pleasant. Dr. Kennedy holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Communications and a minor in Physical Education from Western Carolina University. There he received a full athletic scholarship to participate in football and track. Dr. Kennedy, earned his United States Army officer’s commission in 1989. He later obtained a Master Degree in Art Education at the University of South Carolina and continued his educational pursuit by earning his Doctorate Degree in Education Leadership from South Carolina State University in 2014.
LCA’s new principal believes that all children can learn but each learns in a different way and at different rates. “I believe that hard work and perseverance can make dreams a reality,” he says. “I am a strong supporter of being positive and building relationships through open communication with staff, students, and parents. Teamwork is the ultimate way a school can be successful in reaching the goal of helping children attain their full potential.” According to Pinnacle Charter Academies CEO Mike D’Angelo, “Dr. Kennedy will be an energetic principal who solves problems with outside the box solutions. His background shows that he enjoys watching students grow and enjoys visiting students while they are learning. He loves the small school climate that allows him to know every student and every student gets to know him.” Dr. Kennedy taught Art Education and served as a school administrator at his alma mater, Richland Northeast High School, and Eau Claire High School in Columbia, SC. He was a successful football and track coach. During his coaching career he was a part of winning state championships in both sports along with helping his student-athletes be accepted into college. He subsequently became the Director of the Freshman Academy at Ridgeview High School in 2005. He later became the Freshman Academy principal at the newly opened South Pointe High School in Rock Hill, and was also a 2012 Assistant Principal nominee in the Rock Hill School District before accepting a principal role at York Preparatory Academy in 2014. During his tenure at York Preparatory, York Prep became a flagship charter school and was recognized as a 2018 National Blue Ribbons School.
Dr. Kennedy has been involved with a number of educational committees throughout his career. He has served in various leadership roles, including technology initiatives, facilitated character education programs, and played a critical role in various aspects of professional and school program development in multiple school districts. He is a member of the South Carolina Association of School Administrators, South Carolina High School League, and the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development. He and his wife Kimberley have been married for 24 years and they are the parents of a son Langston, 23, and a daughter Maya, 20.
