Legion Collegiate Academy Athletic Director Strait Herron has announced the hiring of former South Carolina women’s basketball standout Asia Dozier as head coach for girls’ basketball.
LCA will open its doors next fall at a temporary site (505 University Drive, Trinity Bible Church) while construction is being completed at the permanent location on Mt. Holly Road (Hwy. 901) near the corner of Long Meadow Road.
“Asia is very passionate about the opportunity to help young people and begin a successful coaching career,” says Herron. “She played for one of the best at USC in head coach Dawn Staley and has learned what it takes to be a successful coach. It impressed me that Asia has given private lessons to players in the past, free of charge because she wanted to help them reach their goals.”
Dozier served as a team captain for the 2016 University of South Carolina womens' basketball team and finished her career ranked sixth on the record list for games played (131). She also holds the USC single season record for games played (37 in 2014-15).
In addition to her outstanding playing career, Dozier excelled in the classroom and earned recognition on the SEC Academic Honor Roll all four years of college. Following graduation in 2016, she was selected as one of 75 participants from across the country to participate in the WBCA’s “So You Want to Be A Coach” program.
"Great hire,” said Staley. “Asia was coach-like when she played here at the University of South Carolina, and I think Legion got a steal in her. I just saw her during the high school championships scouting and getting ahead of her job, and that's what you want. She's always thinking. She's always been a cerebral player. Now she gets to put all those thoughts in her head into a young person, and I'm super proud of her."
Before attending USC, Dozier had an outstanding high school career at Spring Valley H.S. where she was named the 2011-12 Gatorade South Carolina Player of the Year and South Carolina Miss Basketball. She led Spring Valley to two state championships, including a perfect 27-0 record during her junior year in 2010-11. She was voted the South Carolina Class 4A Player of the Year in 2009.
Dozier comes from a family that is steeped in Gamecock history. Both her father, Perry, and uncle, Terry, played for South Carolina as did her younger brother PJ. Terry and PJ went on to play in the NBA. She earned her bachelor’s degree in finance with a minor in sport and entertainment management in May 2016.
