Legion Collegiate Academy Athletic Director Strait Herron has announced the hiring of veteran high school and club volleyball coach Humberto Guevara as the Lancers head volleyball coach.
“I feel very fortunate to have crossed paths with Coach Guevara prior to Legion Collegiate Academy,” said Herron. “Being able to see him work on a daily basis made the decision to offer him the volleyball position easy due to the way he interacts with his students and players. He definitely knows his sport, but I’m also excited that he is heading up our special education department and will be a leader for our school.”
LCA will open its doors next fall at a temporary site (505 University Drive, Trinity Bible Church) while construction is being completed at the permanent location on Mt. Holly Road (Hwy. 901) near the corner of Long Meadow Road.
Guevara has been a teacher of middle and high school students in North Carolina, Florida, Maine, and South Carolina for the past 14 years and most recently has been the junior varsity coach at South Pointe High School. He received a bachelor’s degree from Winthrop University in History and Secondary Education and earned a master’s degree from the University of Southern Maine in Special Education.
Guevara says he has enjoyed coaching volleyball, both boys and girls, at the middle school, high school, and in various clubs for 10 years. In 2000, he was voted the Montgomery County Gazette (Maryland) boys volleyball coach of the year, but then took a break from coaching to travel and start a family.
He moved to Rock Hill in 2012 and became the 7th grade volleyball coach for Saluda Trail Middle School. Since 2013 he has served as the junior varsity volleyball coach at South Pointe High School. During the spring and summer months, Guevara has been involved in travel volleyball and has coached the Rock Hill Volleyball Club, Intense Volleyball Club, and is currently coaching at Carolina Juniors Volleyball.
He and his wife live in Rock Hill and they are parents of a son and a daughter.
