Legion Collegiate Academy Athletic Director Strait Herron has announced the hiring of former Northwestern High School All-Stater, All-ACC selection, and professional player Alex Martinez to head both the boys and girls’ soccer programs.
“Alex’s experience as a player and coach makes it easy to see the opportunity for success at Legion Collegiate Academy,” says Herron. “It became apparent during the search process that soccer is very important to Alex. By just talking to him about his high school, college, and professional careers, his passion and excitement about coaching young people is obvious.”
LCA will open its doors next fall at a temporary site (505 University Drive, Trinity Bible Church) while construction is being completed at the permanent location on Mt. Holly Road (Hwy. 901) near the corner of Long Meadow Road.
Martinez’ name is legendary in the Rock Hill area as he and his older brother, Enzo, led Northwestern H.S. to three South Carolina state championships and a No. 1 national ranking in the ESPN and National Soccer Coaches Association of America polls. Martinez is planning on having his brother serve as an assistant on his staff.
A midfielder, Martinez went on to play collegiately after graduating from Northwestern. He played two years at High Point where he tallied 12 goals and four assists in two years before transferring to North Carolina State for his final two seasons. He recorded 13 goals and 18 assists in two years for the Wolfpack and was a first team All-ACC selection in 2012 and a third team pick in 2013. His 10 assists in 2012 led the ACC, and he finished 3rd in goals (11).
Following college, he played for the Carolina Dynamo of the Premier Development League in 2013 and was selected in the third round of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft by Sporting Kansas City after a strong showing at the MLS Player Combine. He graduated from NC State in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in sport management.
