5 Top Tips for Scholarship Application

Scholarships for the upcoming school year are now available! While the application process can seem daunting and overwhelming at times, taking your time and focusing on your unique strengths can help simplify the process. From finding the best specific scholarship for you to working through the application process, we’ve compiled a list of tips to help you realize how obtainable scholarships can be.

1. Reflect on your Passions

Scholarships are not limited to just grades and athletics! If you have a hobby or a passion, there may be a scholarship for that. Whether you enjoy art, music, or a vast variety of other interests, do some research to see if your favorite activity may make you eligible for financial aid.

2. Keep Tabs on your Community

Depending on where you live, there may be scholarships unique to your specific area. Local businesses and organizations like to promote education within their community, so pay attention to offerings or competitions. Stay connected with your community to stay informed about other opportunities, like volunteering. Community service and outreach are great ways of achieving recognition in the form of a scholarship.

3. Consider Minority Scholarships

Legion has partnered with a couple minority scholarship foundations and organizations such as The Minority Foundation and the American Indian Graduate Center. For more information on requirements and eligibility, check out our latest postings on our News and Events page.

4. Be Mindful

We know applying for scholarships can be an overwhelming process. Save time and energy by seeking reputable sources like your guidance counselor or by visiting the Scholarships and Financial Aid page on our website. Keep in mind that you should never have to pay for scholarship entries, so any application that requires that is likely a scam and should be avoided.

5. Make the Effort

Make sure you’re devoting the proper amount of time and focus when applying for scholarships. Finding the right fit for your merits and qualifications will yield better results than just applying aimlessly. When working through the application process, it’s important to pay close attention to requirements and deadlines that are specific to the scholarship. For example, some applications require essays, and some require interviews. During your scholarship search, be sure to not overlook small scholarships. Even a couple hundred dollars can help with smaller expenses like books and supplies.
